Scotland - Fife to Edinburgh

Our next stop was in the Royal Burgh of Falkland. The Stewart Kings from James I onwards enjoyed staying at Falkland. In the 1400s it was declared a Royal Burgh which entitled the town to hold weekly markets and an annual fair. In 1500 James IV built Falkland Palace replacing the castle that belonged to the MacDuffs, the Earls of Fife. You can see some of the ruins of their castle in the palace gardens.
